WADSIS PARTNERS - Expert Centre for Taxonomic Identification (ETI)

Expert Centre for Taxonomic Identification ETI, the Expert Center for Taxonomic Identification, is a not for profit foundation, dedicated to improve on a global scale the quantity, quality and accessibility of taxonomic information, based on an initiative of UNESCO. Funding for ETI's activities is provided by the Dutch Government, the University of Amsterdam and organizations such as the United Nations' Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and various other sources. The identification of species by trained taxonomists is a crucial link in the effort to protect the diversity of the Earths biosphere. By capturing and disseminating the knowledge of taxonomists, ETI is able through its special computer software tools to allow any one, regardless of their background, to identify species and find species related information. Each taxonomic group as studied by specialists and validated as part of ETI's World Biodiversity Database, is prepared for distribution on CD-ROM. ETI has the following main activities:
  • To promote and substantially increase accessibility and sharing of biodiversity information and promote worldwide understanding and awareness and an even distribution of this type of knowledge, including developing countries.
  • To execute research in the field of application of computer techniques in taxonomy and systematics and biodiversity documentation.
  • To develop and distribute innovative interactive multimedia computer software tools for use in biological sciences and education.
  • To set up international networks of taxonomists, who use ETI's standard software to share and exchange knowledge and to document biological diversity.
  • To cooperate with biological knowledge centers such as natural history museums and research institutions and science publishers owning data in the field of biodiversity studies to produce CD-ROM with scientific or educational information.
  • To set up and maintain a World Biodiversity Database, storing basic information on all presently known species and make these data available on internet.
  • To disseminate basic taxonomic knowledge by producing species information and identification systems and teaching tools on CD-ROM and other electronic media.
ETI is a non-profit organization. We can provide you with innovative computer software, technical support, compact disk technology, premastering and production facilities, international networks for scientific reviewing, and just as important an imposing international network of distribution channels though our main distributors Springer-Verlag and UNESCO
