The WADSIS-Demonstrator will cover the transnational area of the Wadden Sea (Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands). The international Wadden Sea stretching on the borders of the North Sea from Den Helder in the Netherlands through Germany to Esbjerg in Denmark is one of the largest nature areas of Europe. The Wadden Sea is of extreme importance because it is one of the few relatively unspoilt nature reserves. The area has an influence far beyond its borders. The North Sea fisheries depend to a large extent on the Wadden Sea because the nursery grounds for many commercial species caught in the North Sea are located in the Wadden Sea. Special attention will be given to the globally important role of the area for birds. Its rich food supplies attract many breeding birds. Also it functions as 'fuelling station' for migrating birds, e.g. for species breeding in Russia and Siberia and wintering in Africa. The area is also of major interest for different economical sectors such as local fisheries, offshore industry (gas, sand and shells extraction), and tourism.
